Our poetry week got off to a great start with a whole school assembly, during which the children learned about the history of poetry and listened to a selection of poems being read in English, German and Irish. On Wednesday, lots of teachers visited other classes to read poems. There have also been lots of poetry writing activities happening throughout the school. For example, Year 1 wrote and illustrated some fantastic animal poems, and Year 6 engaged in some ‘out of the box’ thinking when writing abstract noun poems. The highlight of the week for many children was Thursday’s ‘Poem in Your Pocket’ day, which caused much excitement throughout the day and led to many spontaneous bursts of poetry in the classrooms, corridors and in the playground. As the week draws to an end, we hope that the children will continue to be inspired to write and read poetry!
